Three members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) were killed and one injured Tuesday when a shell exploded inside a Type 10 main battle tank during a live-fire exercise at the Hijudai Training Area in Oita prefecture, southern Japan. The deceased included the tank commander, a gunner, and a safety officer, all of whom were inside the gun turret when the unintentional explosion occurred before the shell was fired. The fourth occupant, the tank driver, survived the blast but suffered facial burns and is conscious.

Following the incident, Masayoshi Arai, chief of staff of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, announced the suspension of live-fire exercises using Type 10 and Type 90 tanks, which utilize the same shells. Arai stated, "We will promptly determine the cause so that we can take preventive measures," framing the deaths as an isolated technical failure rather than a systemic risk inherent in military operations.
Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi echoed this sentiment, telling reporters in Tokyo, "We are trying to confirm the details and cause of the incident. It's extremely regrettable. ... We will ensure thorough safety measures will be in place." These statements from state officials focus on procedural adjustments and safety protocols, offering symbolic concessions that prevent deeper structural challenges to the role and function of the military.
